Book Club-King’s Cage and War Storm

Book Club has turned out to be one of my favorite days of the month!  The Red Queen series has been one of the best series I have read in such a long time.  The first two books were thrilling, and the third and fourth books were no exception. King’s Cage was so good, that I couldn’t stand to wait another month to start the final book.  So in this post, we will cover the final two books, King’s Cage and War Storm.  Just like in Glass Sword, King’s Cage and War Storm both pick up where the last book left off.  It’s just like turning the page of a new chapter.  But let me warn you…this series is so good, it is very difficult to put down.  You just NEED to know what happens next.  So make sure you give yourself plenty of reading time.

King's Cage

book cover, King's Cage by Victoria Aveyard

Here is the description as seen on Amazon:

“In this breathless third installment to Victoria Aveyard’s #1 New York Times bestselling Red Queen series, rebellion is rising and allegiances will be tested on every side.

Mare Barrow is a prisoner, powerless without her lightning, tormented by her lethal mistakes. She lives at the mercy of a boy she once loved, a boy made of lies and betrayal. Now a king, Maven Calore continues weaving his dead mother’s web in an attempt to maintain control over his country—and his prisoner.

As Mare bears the weight of Silent Stone in the palace, her once-ragtag band of new bloods and Reds continue organizing, training, and expanding. They prepare for war, no longer able to linger in the shadows. And Cal, the exiled prince with his own claim on Mare’s heart, will stop at nothing to bring her back.

When blood turns on blood, and ability on ability, there may be no one left to put out the fire—leaving Norta as Mare knows it to burn all the way down.”

Spoiler Alert

This books does not disappoint!  It is action packed and full of twists, turns, and surprises.  Mare turns out to be Mavens weakness, as he can’t seem to let her go.  He refuses to kill her and ends up spending most of his time with her.  He found a way to weaken her and keep her from using her power, making her into a puppet to further his agenda.  We are finally introduced to the kingdom of the Lakelands, where Maven strikes a deal to marry the Lakeland Princess in exchange for a truce and to end the war.  A trick to gain the approval of the Red’s.  There is an attack on the castle, a rescue attempt for Mare.

There are more new bloods, some with the same power as Mare!  Someone helps Mare escape, a bargain to keep Mare from hurting someone else.  And you will be shocked when you realize who helped her!  After much blood shed, Mare is able to escape and return to her family and Cal where they begin preparing to overtake Maven.  In the end, another prominent leader is killed, which spurs another war into action.  Someone else is taken hostage and there may be an opening for a new king.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate this book a 10!

War Storm

book cover of War Storm by Victoria Aveyard

Like I said earlier, I couldn’t wait to read the fourth book, so here is the description of War Storm as seen on Amazon:

“The #1 New York Times bestselling Red Queen series comes to a stunning conclusion in War Storm.

Mare Barrow learned this all too well when Cal’s betrayal nearly destroyed her. Now determined to protect her heart—and secure freedom for Reds and new bloods like her—Mare resolves to overthrow the kingdom of Norta once and for all . . . starting with the crown on Maven’s head.

But no battle is won alone, and before the Reds may rise as one, Mare must side with the boy who broke her heart in order to defeat the boy who almost broke her. Cal’s powerful Silver allies, alongside Mare and the Scarlet Guard, prove a formidable force. But Maven is driven by an obsession so deep, he will stop at nothing to have Mare as his own again, even if it means demolish everything—and everyone—in his path.

War is coming, and all Mare has fought for hangs in the balance. Will victory be enough to topple the Silver kingdoms? Or will the little lightning girl be forever silenced?

In the epic conclusion to Victoria Aveyard’s stunning series, Mare must embrace her fate and summon all her power . . . for all will be tested, but not all will survive.”

Spoiler Alert

Out of the entire series, this was my least favorite.  Each chapter was from a point of view of a different character, sometimes, not really adding to the overall story line.  This was the longest book yet, but it almost felt like we were just rushing to end all of the various story lines.  There were flirtations between Cameron and Kilorn that I would have like to have seen more of (at least letting us know they ended up together or something along those lines.)  I hate the way the book ended!  Without giving too many details away, the book is left very open ended.

Cal and Mare very clearly have feelings for each other, but choose to walk away from one another.  Maven’s death happens so suddenly, it is almost disappointing.  The way the series continuously hinted at the possibility of his redemption, it would have been nice to see something more happen with him.  The Lakeland women escape and what?  No one ever hears from them again?  There are so many questions left unanswered!  Whether this is done to allow the reader to create the ending they wish, or to leave the possibility of more books in the future, I don’t know.  But I NEED TO KNOW what happens between Mare and Cal!  I want it tied up in a pretty bow, no loose ends.  Victoria Aveyard, if you’re reading this, please, PLEASE, give me one more book!  Let me know what happens next.  End my torture!

On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate this book a 7!
